About the Doctor:
Dr. John McHale grew up in Dorchester, MA near Bowdoin and Quincy Streets. Despite several years of higher education, he cannot shake the accent. Dr. McHale's dad, Edward grew up in Southie and was an MP in Korea and a Boston police officer during the tumultuous integrated busing years. His mom Jean is a Brighton High grad and was a secretary for years at BU dental school. Dr. McHale attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and graduated "all facted up" with a double major in microbiology and medical technology. He has worked as a clinical chemist at the Deaconess Hospital in Boston while attending graduate school at the New England College of Optometry on Beacon Street in Boston. After internships in Jacksonville, Florida (surgical eye care), Atlanta, Georgia (acute and tertiary eye care), St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Brighton (hospital based eye care), and Dorchester Community Health Center (community health primary eye care) Dr. McHale graduated and got his license to practice in Massachusetts in 1988, at the age of 27. He could not get enough so Dr. McHale applied for and was accepted to a post graduate residency program in geriatric primary eye care at Boston's Veterans Administration Hospital. Dr. McHale's true education began in the private practice offices of Dr. Syd Sorrell in Somerville, Dr. Marshall Feldman in Randolph, and Dr. Greg Eaton in Norwell. He learned more from these three doctors about quality private practice patient care than he did from all his formal years of schooling combined. Dr. McHale entered solo private practice at an established optical retailer in Winchester in 1993. IDEAL Eye Care has been open and thriving now for over a decade on Main Street in Reading. |
